Banarasi, Chanderi, Kanjivaram: Know Your Silks

India’s silk heritage is vast and regional, with each weaving tradition carrying its own history and character. Here is a primer on three of the most treasured.

Banarasi — the regal classic

Woven in the holy city of Varanasi, Banarasi silk is defined by its opulent gold and silver zari work, Mughal-inspired motifs, and sheer richness. A true Banarasi can take weeks to weave. It is the saree of weddings, of milestone celebrations, of moments meant to be remembered.

Chanderi — the featherlight beauty

From the town of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh comes a silk-cotton blend so fine it is almost translucent. Known for its glossy sheen, lightweight drape, and delicate gold borders, Chanderi is the perfect choice for festive daywear and warm-weather occasions.

Kanjivaram — the southern queen

Woven in Tamil Nadu, Kanjivaram (or Kanchipuram) silk is prized for its durability, vivid contrast borders, and temple-inspired motifs. The body and border are often woven separately and joined with such skill that the seam can withstand decades of wear. It is silk built to become an heirloom.

Choosing a silk is choosing a region, a history, and a feeling. Let the occasion guide you.
